Feature Guests

Sven Olsen’s Brutal Canadian Love Saga will play an acoustic set at Guitar Society fresh from their Fringe ’17 shows “Nights at the Preservatorium.”
They played for us a year or two ago and were fantastic!
[/box] [box type=”shadow”]The Svens are Wellington’s most obscure pop orchestra complete with string section, choir and acoustic band. Last year they released their fifty two song magnum hopeless “The Almanac.” Their songs reflect aspects of everyday life in New Zealand. The joys and sorrows of caving, earthquake strengthening, DHB sterigel and novel prison escapes are all given a hilariously gloomy examination by the Svens.[/box]

Committee meeting for 2017
The committee met at Jane and Owens on Saturday 31st January.
A summary of proceedings as follows:
1. Venue: We will continue to meet at the new venue in upper Cuba Street at Thistle Hall. (Entrance down side in Arthur Street. Door will be open. Go up stairs to first floor)
2. Meeting time. At moment we will meet at normal time of 4.15. 1st Sunday of each month.
3. Questionnaire: We have sent out a questionnaire to all members. We would like the guitar society to grow and also meet the needs and wishes of members and prospective members. If you can fill this in and return that would be very much appreciated.
4. Newsletter: We are planning to get the monthly newsletter out 1 week before the meeting to give you more preparation time.
5. Incorporation: We will look again at incorporation to see if this can be done easily so we can apply for funding.
6. Next Committee meeting: March 5th at 3.45. You would be very welcome if you would like to come along and be part of this group.
7. Large ensemble: We are organizing the music for this at the moment. It will be available on the web site to download and print out. We are determined to start each ensemble session with easy music suitable for all players before moving on to more difficult pieces.
8. Years program: We have established a list of some exciting events for our monthly meeting focus themes – yet to be confirmed.

All in a Garden Green
A 16th century English air. Grade: 1
Drink to Me Only
An English air from around the year 1770 Grades: 1-3

The pieces we will work with today will be in the following order:
1.All in a garden
2. Drink to Me Only
3. German Dance
4. The water is wide

Two more pieces that you also might to look at and will be included soon are:

Hong Dou Ci http://www.forrestguitarensembles.co.uk/Assets/scores/quartets/Q0064HongDouCi.pdf

and Le Phenix http://www.forrestguitarensembles.co.uk/Assets/scores/quartets/Q0015LePhenix.pdf

Hong Dou Ci is easier, Le Phenix is more challenging.

These all have reasonably simple parts. . But also some parts are more difficult than others for the same piece. Choose a part that is reasonably easy to play for you.

Please if possible do this download and printing for yourself. However, If you forget to do this before the meeting – fear not – we will have paper copies at the meeting. But it is a big help if you can do this for yourself.

Even you can only play in the first piece that would be fantastic!

If you are not part of this – be brave – choose a part that suits your ability – get the music and start practising. It is both very enjoyable and a great help in developing your playing skills.

Members playing
I encourage people to play a piece. And please remember – it does not have to be the hardest piece in the world. And also it does not have to be played perfectly to be enjoyable for others to listen to.
Anyone who has something to play would be very welcome. This is a big part of what we are about – lots of us playing guitar.
It would be great to hear more playing from others.
It could be a future or previous exam piece for example. Or just something you have been working on recently.
See you there this coming Sunday for more enjoyable guitar playing and listening.
