Guitar Ensemble: This month features an extended rehearsal of ensemble music for our Christmas Concert

If you have yet to join our ensemble – be brave – choose a part that suits your ability – print the music and start practicing.

Owen has very kindly (as he does each year) taken responsibility for organising the guitar ensemble music.

The pieces we are playing for a start are the following:

1.       Joropo
2.       Tyrolean Cradle Song
3.       The Sage Leaf
4.       Going Cuckoo
5.       The Water is wide.
6.     Little Prelude
7.     Forrest Ensemble Series No. 5 (My Love Hath Vow’d, Banks and Braes, Minuet for the French Horn, Gavot, La Filadora)

Copies of all the above the ensemble pieces are available via this website (free to the public):

Performance opportunities:

All members and guests at the WCGS meetings are warmly encouraged to play something! This is a friendly and supportive performance outing which can help to focus your practice each month.  And please remember – it does not have to be the hardest piece in the world. And also it does not have to be played perfectly to be enjoyable for others to listen to. This a big part of what we are about – lots of us playing guitar. It could be a future or previous exam piece for example. Or just something you have been working on recently. Just let one of the committee members know at the start of the meeting so we can budget the time.

Other things happening at the September meeting:

Performances by students of the NZSM in preparation for forthcoming competitions and exams.

Previous meetings and concerts:

Daniel and Marla Nistico performed at our last meeting, they played a beautifully prepared programme of flute and guitar repertoire with precision and flair.

Stephanie Jones performed at the ACR on Friday night, 19th of August. All who attended were astonished by her extraordinary command of a challenging programme. Stephanie opened with a flawless performance of Bach’s violin sonata BWV 1001, the velocity and flow of her playing was immediately breathtaking. She played Giuliani’s Variations, Op 107 “The Harmonious Blacksmith” emphasizing it’s Bel Canto style, Albeniz’ Cadiz, and Llobet’s Romanza Scherzo-Vals in a suitably romantic vein. In the second half we heard Recuerdos, Inveirno Porteno by Piazzolla and Walton’s Five Bagatelles. All were played with exceptional regard for the formal beauty of the music revealing an exquisite depth of feeling. This was a wonderful concert and much appreciated by every member of the audience. Stephanie gave us a lovely offering by Llobet as an encore before coming out of the green room to chat with those remaining.
