Firstly we had our regular large group play in. This is always fun and seems to go nicely and is an enjoyable group to be part of. Then we had a variety of students and prospective students from the NZ School of music a variety of quality guitar repertoire with polish and panache. Bravo! Mike WR played a duet written by Michael Calvert in 1993. It is called “A small gift”. Michael Calvert won the New Zealand guitar composition last year. This was organised by Matthew Marshall and there are plans for Matthew to create a CD of work by Michael Calvert. Mike WR had recorded himself playing one part and then played this back through an amp while he played the other. Wednesday October 30th – Owen Moriarty is playing solo at St Andrews on the Terrace at 12.15pm. Wednesday November 27th – Duo Tapas (Owen Moriarty guitar and Rupa Maitra violin) play at St Andrews on the Terrace at 12.15 Friday 15th November – There is a café concert at Mojos in upper Willis Street (just down from old Settlement restaurant) starting at 7pm. Members and interested parties are warmly invited to the next WCGS meeting Sunday August 11th, New Crossways, 6 Roxburgh St, Mt Victoria. Start; 4.15 Group playing – 5pm solo/ensemble open mic! – 5.15pm guest artist – 6.20pm finish Currently studying a Masters of Music Performance at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Daniel frequently participates in major competitions and has been the recipient of several awards and prizes, including the Classical Guitar Society of Victoria’s ‘Alhambra Sadie Award’ – one of Australia’s most prestigious classical guitar awards. In 2011 Daniel won 1st place representing Australia and New Zealand in the Lions Global Youth Music Competition held in Seattle USA. Taranaki Summer School

Held at Highlands Intermediate School, 2012 was the first Summer School for classical guitar held in New Zealand since the early ’90’s. This Taranaki Classical Guitar Summer School was jam packed with workshops, masterclasses and ensembles designed to improve both guitar playing and appreciation. Culminating in performance at Pukekura Park Festival of Lights, the 2012 Summer School was a huge success with over 60 participants. This success was felt by all the participants: “What a fantastic week!! Many thanks again to organisers and participants alike who made this such a great occasion.
