Poneke musician Julie Bevan began her musical training on piano, graduating to guitar as soon as she could get a hold of one. She fell in love with the music of Brazil after hearing the music of the great Brazilian composer and guitarist Baden Powell. This passion led to her receiving a CNZ grant to travel to Brazil to study Brazilian music.

It was in Brazil that Julie first began to composer music. She recorded her first composition ‘Saudades’ there in 2006 with pianist Alberto Farrah and trumpeter Dr Mike Ryan. In the ‘90s Julie founded her first band ‘Zamba Flam’ This was the first group in Aotearoa to specialise in Brazilian music. They have performed in many major festivals around Aotearoa including the International Arts Festival and National Jazz Festival.

In 2018 she recorded her first album of original music ‘Kaleidoscope’ This album was recorded in Rio de Janeiro and was produced by Brazilian musician/composer and producer Marcelo Nami. She is currently working on a 2nd album ‘Korimako’

Julie is a member of SOUNZ and APRA /AMCOS and a founding member of the ever-popular Wellington Batucada.
